The POLAR Exploration Ship

The POLAR Exploration Ship combines warm steaming 70's rock with the cold alternative sound of the 90's.

Based at The Hague (the Netherlands), the band was set up in 2004 by Selwyn Slop, lead singer and guitarist of the emo-core band Incense. Inspired by acts like The International Tussler Society, Sonic Youth, The Allman Brothers Band, Yes and Sebadoh, Slop first started working together with Lennart Bess (also playing in Burma Shave) on drums, pedal steel guitar and banjo. In the course of 2005, Fender Rhodes and organ player Peter van der Meer (ex-Mashed Potatoes), Mark Bubberman (ex-Kinkster) and local slide-guitar legend Willem Mulock were welcomed aboard.

Things got more serious when Incense decided to split up and song-writing Slop could devote all his time to The POLAR Exploration Ship. In the spring of 2005, the band played its first show as support act of HGH (with ex-Motorpshycho drummer Gebhardt), and in the autumn an EP was released that received positive reviews in the Dutch national media.

Early 2006, The POLAR Exploration Ship did gigs in numerous Dutch clubs, and also played in Germany, on Radio 3 voor 12 (Club Lek) and at the Ahoy' stadium as support act. Summer saw the band performing at several Dutch festivals, including Koninginnenach as headliner, Metropolis and De Beschaving. Next, it toured the Netherlands again as one of the most popular acts of the travelling Popronde festival. At present, preparations for the recording of an album are in full swing.
